Whether you're bass fishing, salmon fishing, fly fishing, spearfishing or deep sea fishing, ScalePrints can help you bring home a trophy. Scales are like fingerprints, each one is unique. Like rings on a tree each scale tells a story of the fishes life history. Seasonal growth, fish health, and environmental factors all contribute to the formation of each individual scale. Popular fish include: bass, salmon, trout, rockfish, lingcod, and many more.
Scale collection is quick and easy! In most species, scales can be
collected non-lethally during catch and release fishing.
Just remove scales, any scale will work, but I like to remove scales from above the lateral line between the dorsal fin and the tail. Follow instructions below for external or embedded scales.
(Bass, trout, ocean salmon, rockfish, lingcod, etc.)
Scrap scales off the fish with the back of a knife or tool, collect about 10-15 scales. If you are releasing your catch, rub the area to redistribute the fishes protective slime. Place scales in small plastic bag or folded wax paper and let dry.
Cut off a shallow 1 to 2 inch square of skin being careful not to cut into flesh. Allow skin sample to dry (1-2 days) and place in a small plastic bag.
Place dry scales in folded piece of paper and place in envelop addressed to:
